The Origin Of Zamzam Well
.Hajar was the first woman to wear a robe with a train to hide her footsteps from her co-wife Sarah who was jealous of her. Later on, a Revelation was sent to Abraham to take Hajar and her son Ishmael to Mecca. Abraham (peace be upon him) brought Hajar and her son Ishmael (peace be upon him), whom she was still nursing, and left them at (the site of) the House of Allah [Ka`bah] under a tree above Zamzam. Mecca at that time was a place where there was neither water nor dwellers. He left a bag of dates and a waterskin for them. Then, Abraham (peace be upon him) went away. Ishmael's mother said to him, "O Abraham! Where are you going? Are you going to leave us in this valley where there is neither human nor living creature?" She repeated this several times, but he did not answer. Finally, she asked him, "Has Allah commanded you to do so?" He answered, "Yes." Thereupon she said, "Then He will not let us perish!".
Then, she returned back to her place. Abraham left and when he reached a mountain pass where he could no longer be seen by them, he turned his face toward the Ka`bah and with his hands raised, supplicated, " O Our Lord! I have made of my offspring to dwell in a valley without cultivation by Your Sacred House; in order Our Lord, that they may establish regular Prayer: so fill the hearts of some among men with love towards them, and feed them with fruits, so that they may give thanks."
Ishmael's mother drank from her waterskin and nursed her baby, until all the water she had was gone and her milk dried up. Thus, her son grew hungrier and hungrier. He was writhing with hunger and she could hardly bear to look at him. So she went and stood at Al-Safa - the hill nearest to her - and looked down in the valley to see if there was someone there to help, but she could see no one. She, then, climbed down Al-Safa and reached the valley. She struggled hard, crossed the valley and reached Al-Marwah. She stood thereon and looked all around. Still she could see no one nearby. She repeated this seven times. When she reached Al-Marwah, she heard a sound and said to herself, "Be Quiet." She heard the sound again. Whereupon she said, "I have heard you. Help me, if you can." All of a sudden, she found an angel at the place where Zamzam now is. He kept digging the well with his heel (in another narration: with his wing) until water flew out. She used a waterskin to keep some of the overflowing water. She drank and gave water to her child. The angel addressed her, "Do not be afraid! for in this site, this child and his father will establish the House of Allah. Verily, Allah will not bring harm to those who believe in Him."
Shortly, a group of the Jurhum tribe came nearby and saw a bird hovering about the spot of water. They sent one or two slaves to explore the place. The two explorers returned after determining the exact position of the water. They headed for Mecca and asked Hajar, Ishmael's mother, for permission to settle in that place. She gave them permission but stipulated that they would have no right to the water. They agreed on her condition.
RE-DIGGING OF ZAMZAM:
While `Abdul-Muttalib was sleeping in the Hijr, he was ordered, "Dig Barrah" He asked, "What is Barrah?" On the next day, while sleeping in the same place, he was also ordered "Dig Al-Madnunah." He asked, "What is Madnunah?" Then, the caller vanished. On the next day, he slept in the same place and was ordered, "Dig Tibah", He asked, "What is Tibah?" On the fourth day, it was said to him, "Dig Zamzam". He said, "What is Zamzam?" He was answered, "It never becomes empty or constricts." Then, its place was marked for him. He began to dig, and Quraish said to him, "What is it, `Abdul-Muttalib?" He said, "I have been commanded to dig the well of Zamzam."
Then, `Abdul-Muttalib went on digging until he found two golden deers. These were the two deers that had been buried there by the Jurhum clan at the time they were expelled from Mecca. It is the well of Ishmael bin Abraham (peace be upon them both). Thereupon, when `Abdul-Muttalib dug Zamzam, guided in this and singled out for it by Allah, he received increasing honor and influence among his own people.

History > Abraham

THE CONSTRUCTION BY ABRAHAM
It is the only story of the construction of the Ka`bah stated in the Holy Qur'an.
LAYING THE FOUNDATION:
1. When Allah gave His command to Abraham to build the Sacred House, Abraham immediately went to Mecca to carry out Allah's injunction. When he arrived there, he said to his son Ishmael, "Allah has given me a command, so what shall we do?" Ishmael replied, "Do as Allah has commanded you." "Will you," said Abraham, "support me in it?" Ishmael replied, "My support is with you." Thereupon Abraham, pointing to a hill, said, "Allah has commanded me to build a shrine here." Abraham and Ishmael set forth to lay the foundation of the Sacred House. Ishmael brought the bricks while Abraham laid them until the construction was erected. While engaged in the diligent work of constructing the Holy Shrine, they kept praying to Allah, "Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us: for Thou art the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. Our Lord! Make of us Muslims bowing to Thy (Will); and show us our places for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning, most Merciful."
2. No authentic references state that the Sacred House had been built before Abraham (peace be upon him). However, some people argue that the Sacred House was built before Abraham, supporting their argument by the Qur'anic verses, "Behold! We gave the site, to Abraham, of the (Sacred) House." and "And remember Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House," These verses suggest that the foundations and the site were there before Abraham. Nevertheless, the sound view is that these verses mean that the location and site of the Sacred House had been determined in Allah's Eternal Knowledge, the day He created the heavens and the earth. Thus the location of the House had been known, but the actual process of construction was carried out first by Abraham, the Close One to Allah, and his son, Ishmael (peace be upon them both)
Other stories related to the construction of the House have been attributed to the Israelites. Such stories are not to be either accepted nor rejected, for the best knowledge is with Allah, the All-Knowing.
When Abraham, the Close One to Allah, built the Sacred House, he made it according to the following specifications:
* |
Height: 9 cubits. |
* |
Length (from the Black Stone to the Syrian Corner): 32 cubits. |
* |
Width (from the Syrian Corner to the Western Corner): 22 cubits. |
* |
Length (from the Western Corner to the Syrian Corner): 31 cubits. |
* |
Width (from the Yemeni Corner to the Black Stone): 20 cubits. |
He made a door frame on the ground level, but did not fix a door to it. It remained so until Tubba` of Himiar made a door for the Sacred House, which was put in place later.
Abraham, peace be upon him, raised the House on two pillars: the two Yemeni Corners.
Next to the Black Stone, he did not make any pillars, but built it in a half circle as it can be found today. It has been found in some narrations that Abraham, peace be upon him, built the Sacred House when he was one-hundred years old. Allah knows best.
ANGELS' BUILDING OF THE KA`BAH:
(NOTICE: This version of the Ka'bah's construction by the Angles is groundles and mentioned only to indicate its weakness.) Allah, the Exalted, said to the Angels, " I will create a vicegerent on earth. The Angels said, " O Lord! A vicegerent other than ourselves, who will make mischief therein, shed blood, practise envy and hatred, while we celebrate Thy praise and glorify Thy Holy Name, and disobey Thou not". Allah, the Exalted, said, " I know what ye know not."
The Angels thought that what they had said was considered a rejection of their Lord's Will, and that He, therefore, became angry with them. Thereupon, they sought shelter under the Throne, raised their heads, pointed their fingers, submissively entreated Him, and wept as they were afraid of His wrath.
They compassed the Throne round for a long time. Accordingly, Allah looked upon them, and His mercy was sent down unto them. Then, Allah built a house beneath the Throne called Al-Bait Al-Ma`mur [the Oft-frequented House]. Then, He said to the Angels, "Circumambulate round this House and leave the Throne." Thereupon, the Angels circumambulated round the House. Seventy thousand Angels would visit the House night and day and never return.
Then, Allah, the Exalted, sent Angels down to earth and said, "Build a House for Me on earth, based on the same design and measurements." Allah, the Exalted, ordered Man to go round that House [Ka`bah] such as was done to the Oft-frequented House by the Angels.
THE CONSTRUCTION BY ADAM (PBUH):
(NOTICE: This version of the Ka`bah's construction by Adam is groundless and is mentioned only to indicate its weakness).
1. |
It is reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah sent Gabriel to Adam and Eve to say to them, "Build a House for Allah." Gabriel laid the designs for them. Then, Adam began to dig while Eve removed the dust, until he struck water. Whereupon, he was called from beneath, "Adam! That is enough!" |
2. |
After completing construction, Adam was directed by Allah to circumambulate the House [Ka'bah]. It was said to him, "You are the first Man (to be created), and this is the first House to be built." Several centuries passed until the foundations of the House were laid by Abraham. Thus, the first person to lay the foundations of the House, pray therein, and circumambulate it was Adam (peace be upon him). |
THE CONSTRUCTION BY SHEETH:
(NOTICE: This version of the Ka`bah's construction by Sheeth is groundless and mentioned only to indicate its weakness).
1. |
Following Adam's death, his sons built the House [Ka`bah] from mud and stone. (It has been narrated that the one who built it was Sheeth (peace be upon him). It was maintained and frequented by their children until Noah's time when it was demolished and obliterated by the Flood. |
2. |
According to some of the Judaic tales narrated by Wahb bin Munabbih, Adam pitched a tent at the site of the House. When he died, that tent was lifted up by Allah, the Exalted. Thus, the first construction of the House was undertaken by Adam's sons. |

History > Al-`Amaliqah
CONSTRUCTION OF THE KA`BAH BY AL-`AMALIQAH
The Ka`bah, built by Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon them), lasted for centuries. When it did collapse, the tribe of Al-`Amaliqah built it anew.
* In most references, no details about that construction are available.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
History - Jurhum

THE CONSTRUCTION BY JURHUM
After being built by Al-`Amaliqah, the House [Ka`bah] lasted for a long time without any change. Then it was flooded by a torrent descending from the heights of Mecca. As a result, one of its walls cracked, but did not collapse. The tribe of Jurhum repaired the weak sections and, moreover, erected a wall between the Ka`bah and the path of torrential rains. In another narration, the House was demolished by a torrential flood; then, Jurhum rebuilt it on the same foundation of the construction of Abraham (peace be upon him). They added two latches and a lock to it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------History > Qusai

THE CONSTRUCTION OF QUSAI BIN KILAB
The first one to renovate the Ka`bah after Abraham, the Close One (peace be upon him), was Qusai bin Kilab. He covered it with a roof made of doum wood and palm branches.
Al-A'asha said: (from the Tawil Meter)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CONSTRUCTION BY QURAISH
1- Once, at the time when Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) had reached adulthood (or had reached the age of twenty-five, as it has been said), a woman was perfuming the Ka`bah with incense. A spark from her censer caught the covering of the Ka`bah and set it on fire. The fire seriously damaged the Ka`bah. As a result, people pulled the Ka`bah down. Then, they started to build it again. When the work reached the point of placing the Black Stone, a quarrel broke out among them regarding which tribe would have the honor of raising it into its proper place. Eventually, they agreed that the first man to enter the gate of Banu Shaibah should decide for them. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) happened to be the first to enter and was appointed arbitrator. He then asked for a cloth on which he placed the Stone in the middle. He ordered every subdivision or, as it has been said, all chieftains to take hold of an end of that cloth. Together they all lifted it into its place. Then, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) fixed it in its proper position. Quraish erected six pillars in two rows in the House [Ka`bah].
2. Adopting the suggestion of Abu Hudhaifah bin Al-Mughirah, Quraish raised the Ka`bah door to a level higher than the ground. According to Abu Hudhaifah bin Al-Mughirah, "O People! Raise the Ka`bah door to be entered only by a ladder. Then, it can not be entered by anyone you do not like. If anyone whom you do not like comes, you can throw the ladder down, as a warning to whoever sees them." Quraish, after doing so, further increased its height from nine to eighteen cubits. Quraish also reduced the height of the foundations of Abraham because they did not have enough provisions to complete it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
History > Ibn Al-Zubair

THE CONSTRUCTION BY `ABDULLAH BIN AL-ZUBAIR
1- In the era of Yazid bin Mu`awiah, the House [Ka`bah] was damaged by fire. `Abdullah bin Al-Zubair left the Ka`bah as it was until the pilgrims came for Hajj. When the pilgrims had departed, he said, "O People! Advise me, is it better to pull down the Ka`bah and then rebuild it or just mend its weak parts. Ibn 'Abbas said, "I think it is better to mend its weak parts, and preserve the shape of the House and the Stones in regard to which people have converted to Islam. Also, it is in that exact position that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was inspired." Ibn Al-Zubair said, "If any of you had a house that was burnt, you would not be satisfied until you had renovated it. What then should be be done about the House of your Lord? I will supplicate the Lord, asking him for true guidance for three days. Then, I will make up my mind.
2. When three days had passed, he resolved to pull it down. The people shunned carrying this out, fearing a retribution from Heaven would befall the first to approach it. Finally, a man mounted the roof of the Ka`bah and threw some stones off it. When all saw he had not been afflicted, they did as he did. They demolished it to the last stone. Ibn Al-Zubair put up piers and hung the curtains over them until the building was completed. People began to circumambulate these curtains at all times. Thus, circumambulation of the Ka`bah was never abandoned.
3. Ibn Al-Zubair said, "I heard `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) say, 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: " If your people had not quite recently abandoned the Ignorance (Unbelief), and it I had sufficient provisions to rebuild it [the Ka`bah], I would have added five cubits to it from the Hijr. Also, I would make two doors; one for people to enter therein and the other to exit." Ibn Al-Zubair said, "Today, I can afford to do it and I do not fear the people.
4. When Ibn Al-Zubair demolished the Ka`bah and leveled it to the ground, he uncovered Abraham's foundations and found that they occupied about six cubits of the Hijr. The stones of that foundation looked like camels' necks, red and interlaced.
5. During the digging, he accidentally found a grave and said, "This is the grave of the mother of Ishmael (peace be upon him) and he made fifty of the elite witness that.
6. `Abdullah bin Muti` Al-'Adawi put a crowbar beneath one of the corners and shook it. All the corners trembled and the walls of the House were shaken. Also, all Mecca violently quivered, and the people became frightened. Thereupon, Ibn Al-Zubair said, Witness!" Then he laid the building on that foundation. He also made two doors at the ground level. The third door he left as it was.
7. Ibn Al-Zubair added nine cubits to the height of the Ka`bah, thus, it was twenty cubits high.
8. Its walls were two cubits wide.
9. He reduced the pillars inside the House to three instead of six as were earlier built by Quraish.
10. He brought marble from San`a' and placed it in a hole in the ceiling to let light in.
11. He fixed two latches to the door. Their height was eleven cubits.
12. He made a crooked wooden ladder to be used to mount it.
13. When Ibn Al-Zubair completed the construction of the Ka`bah, he perfumed it inside and outside with scent and saffron. In addition, he covered it with Qabati (Egyptian linen cloth).
14. Ibn Al-Zubair sacrificed one hundred she-camels, and circumambulated the House and touched all its corners.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
History > Al-Hajjaj

THE CONSTRUCTION BY AL-HAJJAJ BIN YUSUF AL-THAQAFI
1-When he entered Mecca following the murder of `Abdullah bin Al-Zubair, Al-Hajjaj wrote to `Abdul-Malik bin Marwan telling him what Ibn Al-Zubair had undertaken. Then, `Abdul-Malik bin Marwan wrote him back to demolish what Ibn Al-Zubair had added to it from the Hijr, restore its old form, wall up the west door and leave the rest as it was.
2. Al-Hajjaj pulled down the wall which was in the Hijr, restored it in its original place, and added that space to the Hijr.
3. He removed the wooden ladder placed inside the Ka`bah by Ibn Al-Zubair.
4. He reduced the door's height by five cubits.
5. He walled up the western door and restored the original door to its old form.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
History > Murad Khan

THE CONSTRUCTION BY SULTAN MURAD KHAN
1- In Mecca, a very heavy rain, started on Wednesday, 19 Sh`ban, 1039 A.H. and developed into a violent torrential rain which swept away most of the Sacred Mosque. On Thursday, the Shami Wall and some parts of the eastern and western walls collapsed. The rain lasted for a long time leaving people in great turmoil.
2. Then, Muslims began to prepare for rebuilding the Ka`bah. The work went on under the supervision of Sultan Murad Khan, until it was completed, with Allah's aid, on the second of Dhul-Hijjah, 1040 A.H. This construction took about six and a half months.
3. This was the last time the Ka`bah was rebuilt and still maintains the same form. During the Saudi era, successive expansions followed. This will be discussed in the section on the Expansions of the Sanctuary.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Station of Abraham
1. It is the stone on which Abraham (peace be upon him) used to stand when the walls of the Ka`bah grew higher than his stature. Ishmael erected that stone for him.
2. It is a well-known fact that the height of the Ka`bah was nine cubits when built by Abraham, the Close One. Then, Quraish made it eighteen. Afterwards, `Abdullah bin Al-Zubair made it twenty-seven cubits high and it has remained at that height until nowadays.
3. The Hijr remained touching the wall of the Ka`bah until the days of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab where he set it apart from the House [Ka`bah] in order that the masses circumambulating it would not distract those performing prayer therein.
4. The footprints of Abraham, the Close One, are and still marked in the stone. In his famous poem (Al-Lamiyyah), Abu Talib said:
Abraham's footprint
On the rock still distinct.
On his feet did he tread, With no mark of footwear.
This means that Abraham's honored foot sank into the stone, and left a mark which equals the size of his bare foot.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ka`bah Door
1. The building of Abraham: He raised the door to the ground level.
2. The building of Quraish: They raised the door according to the suggestion of Abu Hudhaifah bin Al-Mughirah.
3. The building of Ibn Al-Zubair: He made it close to the ground, and added another on the western side, between the two Corners, Al-Shami and Al-Yemeni
4. The building of Al-Hajjaj: He raised the door to its old shape, and walled up the western door.
5. The present door: It is made of pure gold by his Majesty late King Khalid bin `Abdul-`Aziz, may Allah have mercy upon his soul.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Black Stone

The Black Stone
1- It was Abraham (peace be upon him) who first fixed the Black Stone in its position. It is a precious stone from Paradise.
2. When Banu Bakr bin `Abd Manah bin Kinanah and Ghishan bin Khuza`ah forced Jurhum to leave Mecca, `Amr bin Al-Harith bin Mudad Al-Jurhumi buried two golden deer and the Black Stone in the Well of Zamzam. Then, he set forth with the Jurhumi fellows for Yemen.
3. The Black Stone did not rest for long in the Well of Zamzam. A woman from Khuza`ah led her people to its hiding place, for she had seen Jurhum burying it. They, therefore, restored it to its position. This took place before the construction of Qusaiy bin Kilab.
4. Under the leadership of Abu Tahir, the Karmathians seized Mecca. They killed seven hundred persons inside the Sanctuary while they were clinging to the Ka`bah. With their bodies Abu Tahir filled Zamzam up and floored the Sacred Mosque and its precincts. Moreover, he usurped the people's wealth, jewels of the Ka`bah and ripped its curtains apart. He shared out the covering of the Ka`bah amongst his followers, practised plunderage, pulled out the Ka`bah door and the golden waterspout. On the seventh of Dhul-Hijjah, 317 A.H. Abu Tahir ordered Ja`afar bin `Ilaj to remove the the Black Stone. That followed committing many atrocities against those who circumambulated the Sacred House, took seclusion for worship, bowed, or prostrated themselves therein [in Prayer]. The Karmathians took the Black Stone to Hajar (their homeland), leaving its place in the Ka`bah empty. The people, seeking blessing, used to put their hands in its empty place until the Black Stone had been restored by Sunbur bin Al-Hasan the Karmathian on Tuesday, the Day of Sacrifice, 339 A.H. Thus, the Stone remained missing for about twenty-two years.
5. In 363, a Roman approached the Black Stone and hit it violently with an axe which made a scratch that is still apparent therein. He raised his arm to hit it again, but a Yemeni stabbed him.
6. In the Year 413, the Fatimids sent some of their Egyptian followers who were induced by Al-Hakim Al-`Ubaidi. Among them was a man with reddish-blond hair, well-built and tall. He carried a sword and a crowbar. He hit the Stone thrice and splinters flew. He said, "Until when will that Stone be worshipped? Neither Muhammad nor `Ali can prevent me from what I am doing. I am determined to pull this House down." Whereupon, he was surrounded by the Knights who killed and burnt him together with his supporters."
7. In 990 A.H., a non-Arab came with a crowbar in his hand and hit the Black Stone. Prince Nasser, however, stabbed him to death.
8. At the end of Muharram, 1351 A.H., an Afghani came and pulled out a piece of the Stone, stole a piece of the Ka`bah covering and a piece of silver from the Ka`bah ladder. The guards caught him. Then, he has been sentenced to death as punishment. On the 28th of Rabi` I, 1351 A.H., His Majesty King `Abdul-'Aziz bin `Abdul-Rahman Al-Faisal Al-Sa'ud, came from Ta'if to the Sacred Mosque where he re-affixed the piece which had been pulled out by that damned person. He used a chemical compound mixed with musk and ambergris specially prepared by chemists to affix that piece.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Hijr

Hijr Isma`il
1- The Ka`bah, when built by Abraham (peace be upon him), was nine cubits high; which is one third its present height. Abraham laid it upon its foundations, of which six cubits, at present, have been added to the Hijr of Ishmael. The user can distinguish between the size of the Hijr in old times and its present size in a very easy way. Most of the straight wall of the Hijr facing the Ka`bah's northern wall is part of the Ka`bah itself.
2. When Quraish built the Ka`bah, they moved the northern wall five cubits to the south and added them to the Hijr.
3.When `Abdullah bin Al-Zubair rebuilt the Ka`bah, he restored it to its previous form established by Abraham. Also, he added that space of Hijr to the Ka`bah.
4.Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf restored the Hijr to its present shape.
RENOVATING AND ADDING MARBLE TO THE HIJR OF ISHMAEL
1. |
The Abbasid Caliph Abu Ja`far Al-Mansur was the first one to add marble to the Hijr in 140 A.H. |
2. |
The Caliph Al-Mahdi renewed it in 161 A.H. |
3. |
The Caliph Al-Mutawakkil renewed it in 241 A.H. |
4. |
The Abbasid Caliph Al-Mu`tadid renovated it in 283 A.H. Then, the Minister Jamal Al-Din, known as Al-Jawwad (the Generous) also renovated it in 550 A.H. |
5. |
The Abbasid Caliph Al-Nasir renovated it in 576 A.H. |
6. |
Al-Nasir Qalawun renovated it in 720 A.H. |
7. |
Al-Mansour `Ali bin King Al-Ashraf Sha`ban bin Husain bin King Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun renovated it in 781 A.H. |
8. |
Prince Baisaq also renovated it. |
9. |
Commander `Ala' Al-Din renovated it in Rajab 822 A.H. |
10. |
Prince Zain Al-Din Muqbil Al-Qadidi renovated it in 826 A.H. |
11. |
Then, Saudun Al-Muhammadi renovated it with marble from Egypt in 838 A.H. |
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Qur'an Stories >
The Sacrificed
When Abraham (peace be upon him) left his people's land, he asked his Lord to bless him with a pious son. Therefore, Allah gave him glad tidings that he would be the father of a gentle son, Ishmael (peace be upon him). Ishmael was born when Abraham, the Close One to Allah, was eighty-six years old. When Ishmael was old enough to walk, Abraham saw in a dream that he sacrificed his son. As prophets' dreams are revelations, Abraham's dream was a great trial with which Allah afflicted him. The Qur'an says, "He [Abraham] said; 'O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you, so look, what do you think?'" In reply, Ishmael said, "O my father! Do what you have been commanded. Allah willing, you shall find me of the steadfast." Then, they were commanded to submit themselves to Allah's Will. The Qur'an says, "When they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice)." As Abraham and Ishmael submitted to Allah's Will and began to carry out His commandment, Allah sent angels with glad tidings. The Qur'an says, "We called out to him, `O Abraham! Thou hast already fulfilled the vision!' Thus indeed We reward those who do right. This was obviously a trial. And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice. And We left (blessing) for him among generations (to come) in Later times. Peace and salutation to Abraham! Thus indeed do We reward those who do right. For he was one of Our believing servants."
When Abraham and his son Ishmael passed the trial successfully, Allah redeemed Ishmael's life with a white ram that had sound eyes and horns which Abraham found tied to a tree near Thabir Mount. So he sacrificed it at Mina.
Afterwards, this act has been perpetuated by the rituals of Hajj, especially the rite of sacrifice.

Qur'an Stories > The Hajj Call
When Abraham (peace be upon him) completed the construction of the Ka`bah, Allah, the Exalted and Almighty, commanded him to call all people on earth to perform Hajj [Pilgrimage] to the Sacred House, "And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men; they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways." Abraham, the Close One to Allah, said, "O my Lord! How can the range of my voice reach all people?" Allah, the Almighty, said, "You call, and I will convey your call."
Thereupon, Abraham (peace be upon him) mounted Mount Abu Qubais, covered his ears with his fingers and moved his head once towards the east and once towards the west while calling, "O people! Allah has ordained that you should perform Hajj to the Sacred House. So answer your Lord's call." Allah, the Almighty, conveyed Abraham's message to all children of Adam, and to those still in the loins of their fathers and the wombs of their mothers. So all pilgrims answered his call saying, "O Allah! Here I am, at Thy call."

Qur'an Stories > Abraham's Hajj
After Abraham (peace be upon him) carried out Allah's command to call all people to go on pilgrimage, Gabriel accompanied him and showed him the hills of Safa and Marwah, and defined for him the boundaries of the Sacred Mosque. Gabriel commanded Abraham to divide these boundaries by a wall.
On the 7th of Dhul-Hijjah, after sunset, Abraham (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon at Mecca. He was standing while his son Ishmael sat down, listening to him. On the next day, they went on foot proclaiming Talbiah (i.e. saying, "O Allah! Here I am at Thy call). Each was carrying a staff to lean on and a waterskin to drink from. So it was called the Day of Tarwiah [Watering]. They went to Mina, and there they performed the Noon, Afternoon, Sunset, Night and Morning Prayers. Abraham and Ishmael stayed at Mina until the sun rose over Mount Thabir, then they went on foot, accompanied by Gabriel, to `Arafah. Gabriel showed them the sites at `Arafah, which Abraham had visited earlier. So Abraham said, "I know this site and I know that site. "So it was called Mount `Arafah [Knowledge].
When the sun set, Gabriel escorted them to a place which is now the site of the Holy Mosque. There Abraham stood up to deliver a short sermon, while Ishmael sat, listening to him. Then, Abraham, along with Ishmael, combined the Noon and Afternoon Prayers. Afterwards, Gabriel led them to the nearby hills, and there they kept praying and supplicating to Allah until the sun set, and its glittering light disappeared from the distant horizon of the arid desert. Then they set out from `Arafah on foot until they reached a place called Juma`. There they stopped, performed Sunset and Night Prayers, and stayed until the break of dawn. Then they went to Quzah.
When the sun was about to rise, they walked along until they reached Muhassir. They hastened their pace until they crossed it, then returned to their normal pace. They threw seven pebbles, which they gathered from Juma`, at the Jamrat Al-`Aqabah. Then they left Mina at dawn to offer a sacrifice and cut their hair. Then they spent some days at Mina to throw the pebbles. There they threw the pebbles every day before noon, riding no animals in their way to or from the throwing place. They returned on the 'Day of Return', and performed Noon Prayer at Al-Abtah. Throughout all these rituals, they were accompanied by Gabriel (peace be upon him).

Stories > The Companions of The Elephant
Abrahah built a unique church in San`a called Al-Qullais and wrote to Negus, "I have built a church the like of which has not been built for a king before you. Yet, I shall not find rest until I make the Arabs divert their Pilgrimage to it (instead of the Ka`bah)." When the news of Abrahah's letter to Negus reached the Arabs, a man from the Kinanah tribe became so enraged that he went to Al-Qullais, found a hiding place inside it, and defecated. Abrahah, on learning about this, became so furious that he swore he would demolish the Ka`bah. He gave the order to the Abyssinians to march towards the Ka`bah, and took an elephant with him. Meanwhile, the Arabs were greatly perturbed to learn about Abrahah's plan.
Abrahah dispatched a cavalry troop to Mecca headed by Al-Aswad bin Mafsul, who captured the property of the Kinanah and other tribes. Among the spoils were two hundred camels belonging to `Abdul-Muttalib, the chief of the Quraish.
At first, the Kinanah and Huzail intended to fight against the Abyssinians, yet they gave up the idea when they realized that their enemy greatly overpowered them both in number and ordnance. Then Abrahah sent a man called Hanatah Al-Himiari to Mecca with a message to `Abdul-Muttalib informing him that Abrahah had no intention to fight them, and that he was coming to Mecca for a specific purpose (to demolish the Ka`bah). He, further, told `Abdul-Muttalib that Abrahah wished to meet him if he also had no intention to fight. `Abdul-Muttalib replied, "By Allah neither have we the intention, nor enough power to fight him. The Ka`bah is Allah's House; He alone can defend His house, or else let them demolish it." `Abdul-Muttalib took some of his sons and went with the messenger to meet Abrahah. When he saw some Abyssinian soldiers, he asked them about a prisoner called Dha Nafar who was his friend. When he met his prisoned friend, he said, "O Dha Nafar, could you not find a solution for this problem?" "A prisoner like me who expects his death sentence at any moment is of no avail to you," replied Dha Nafar. "Yet I can ask my friend Anis who takes care of the elephant to arrange a meeting for you with the king, so that you could convey your wishes to him." So, Dha Nafar sent for Anis saying, "I have a friend called `Abdul-Muttalib who is well-known for his generosity and high status among his people. He is also the owner of the well in Mecca. I ask you to speak well of him to the king and try to get him permission to approach the king to present his case concerning the two hundred camels which the king has seized."
After Anis conveyed this message to the king, `Abdul-Muttalib was given permission to have an audience with him. When the king saw `Abdul-Muttalib, he was so impressed by his good countenance and solemn appearance that he refrained from speaking with him from a higher place. Yet he did not like to be seen sitting with him on his own divan. So he descended from his divan, and sat on the rug at the foot of the divan and permitted `Abdul-Muttalib to sit beside him. Then, he told his interpreter to ask `Abdul-Muttalib to present his plea. Thereupon `Abdul-Muttalib requested that the king give him back the two hundred camels which he had taken. Thereupon, the king said to his interpreter, "Tell him that I was very impressed when I first saw him, but I have changed my mind after listening to him. How can he discuss the case of the two hundred camels that I have taken, rather than the matter of demolishing the Ka`bah, which represents a sacrosanct site for him and for his forefathers?" `Abdul-Muttalib replied, "As for the camels, I am their lord, so I have a just cause to defend them. But with regard to the House, its Lord will protect it." "Nonsense!" replied the king, "In no way could He stand in my way or prevent me from doing that." "So be it," were the last words uttered by `Abdul-Muttalib. It was then that the king gave the camels back to him.
`Abdul-Muttalib returned home and told the Quraish what had happened, and advised them to evacuate Mecca and to take the mountain top for shelter. Then, while the assemblies of people surrounded him, he grasped the ring of the Ka`bah's door, and flew into a storm of invocation to Allah, asking Him to destroy and strike down Abrahah and his soldiers.
The following morning Abrahah mobilized his army and prepared his elephant which was called Mahmud. When they led the elephant in the direction of Mecca, the Meccan Nufail bin Habib drew near the elephant and whispered in its ear, "O Mahmud! Kneel down, or return with guided steps; for thou art in a land which has been declared sacred by Allah." On hearing these words, the elephant kneeled down. Enraged, the Abyssinians beat it hard to urge it to stand up, but it was useless. When they directed it in other directions such as towards Yemen and Syria, it would rise up hastily, but kneeled down when directed towards Mecca.
Before long Allah sent hook-like birds coming from the direction of the sea . Each bird carried three stones; one in its beak and two in its legs. These stones were the size of lentils or chick-peas, but were so lethal that they fell upon no one without killing him, and very few survived. The Abyssinians scattered here and there falling down, seeking refuge and finding none. As for Abrahah, he was so badly injured that his fingers fell off. He continued his suffering until he reached San`a where he succumbed.

Qur'an Stories > The Begining of Revelation
`A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reports: The first revelation experiences of the Prophet were in the form of visions in his sleep which later came to pass. At that stage, whenever he saw a vision, it was as true as the bright gleam of dawn. Later he became fond of going to Hira' Cave and worshipping Allah therein for many nights. Then he would go to his wife Khadijah to get provisions and return again to the cave. A divine revelation came to him while he was in Hira' Cave. An angel appeared to him and said "Read!", He replied, "I am unlettered." The angel then hugged the Prophet until he became exhausted, and after letting him go said, "Read!" The Prophet said, "I am unlettered." For the second time, the angel hugged him until he became tired, and after letting him go said, "Read!" The Prophet again replied, "I am unlettered." For the third time the angel hugged him until he became so tired and after letting him go said, "Read! In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created - created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: Read! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful, He who taught (The use of) the pen, taught man that which he knew not. "
The Prophet (peace be upon him) returned home having committed those verses to his heart, and he was trembling. He entered the house and found Khadijah bint Khuwailid and said to her, "Cover me! Cover me!" Khadijah and her household covered him until his fears were allayed. He told Khadijah what had happened and said, "I fear for myself." Khadijah said, "Do not fear, by Allah, He will never humiliate you. By Allah, you strengthen the ties of relationship, you bear people's burdens, you help the destitute, you are a host to guests, and you help against the troubles which afflict people." Then Khadijah took him to her cousin Waraqah bin Naufal bin Asad bin`Abdul-`Uzza. He was a Christian and used to write from the Gospel in Hebrew. He was then an old, blind man, and Khadijah said to him, "O my cousin, listen to your nephew." Waraqah bin Naufal said, "What did you see my nephew?" Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) told him what he had seen. Waraqah said to him, "This is like the message that was revealed to Moses. I wish I were young. I wish I could be alive when your people drive you out." Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) asked, "Will my people drive me out?" Waraqah said, "Yes, for no man has come with what you have brought, but was opposed. If I were to live during your era, I would give you great support."
Not long after that, Waraqah died and the revelation stopped for some time.
